Basic Skills Courses 2010 - 2011

Basic Skills courses are for people who wish to learn to paddle either a canoe or a kayak on inland waterways. The course programme is designed as an introduction with the aim of giving you confidence to enjoy the challenge and excitement of paddling. You will be taught the basic paddle strokes for moving your craft safely and efficiently.

Courses usually commence at 9.00am and finish mid-afternoon.

Course content and certificate:

The Basic Skills Award is purely an intoductory and participation award. The course will cover: An introduction to equipment , basic paddle strokes (for kayak or canoe), water and craft safety, rescue procedure and where to go from here.
At the conclusion of the course you will be provided with a certificate of competency and a booklet that covers an introduction to safe paddling and basic paddle strokes.
The course is to be carried out on a stretch of outdoor, unheated water.

Please Note: A course will not be held if the weather is unsuitable

Courses during Winter (June, July and August) will only be conducted where there is sufficient demand and the weather is suitable on the day

Group Bookings: Courses for a group can be arranged at times to suit  including during weekdays (minimum size for a group is 4)

Enrollment

Please complete the enrollment form (click here) and send it with payment to Canoe SA

Bookings for a course close on the Monday prior to the course. Confirmation of the course will be provided to you during the week preceding the course

Cost

Course Fee - $110.00 (includes use of a kayak,  course notes and certificate) and should be paid at the time of enrollment.

Payment can be by cheque (made payable to Canoe SA - Education), credit card, or EFT (Account Name: Canoe SA, BSB 805005, A/c 5159434. Please quote your surname in the reference)

Clothing

Canoeists always dress for the weather conditions.

In summer that will mean light clothing with adequate sun protection (eyes and skin)

In winter clothing will include woolen or thermal clothing, wetsuits may also be worn, and don't forget the sun protection as winter sun can damage sensitive skin and eyes

Warm weather:

  • bathers or board-shorts
  • long sleve rash vest or shirt
  • hat
  • footwear such as wetsuit booties or sneakers

Cold weather:

  • bathers or board-shorts with thermal pants or track pants
  • thermal top or woolen jumper
  • windproof jacket or cag
  • hat
  • footwear such a wetsuit booties or sneakers.

Personal floatation device (pfd) are required to be worn by government regulation.

If in doubt about the weather, pack extra warm clothing.
