Thursday 2nd & Friday 3rd September 2010 (Flatwater Skills) (at Wellington, SA)

Monday 27th to Thursday 30th September 2010 (Lifeguard) (at Port Augusta)

Monday 17th & Tues 18th January 2011 (Lifeguard) (at Canoe SA, West Lakes)

Thursday 20th & Fri 21st January 2011(Flat-water skills) (at Canoe SA, West Lakes)

Saturday 16th & Sun 17th April 2011 (Lifeguard - at Canoe SA, West Lakes)

Tuesday 19th & Wed 20th April 2011 (Flat-water Skills - at Canoe SA, West Lakes)

Courses held at Canoe SA, Aquatic Reserve, Corner Bower Rd & Old Port Rd, West Lakes

 

Courses can be arranged for groups of 4 or more so please enquire if you are unable to attend the above courses

Please note: If you require the Flat-water Instructor qualification you may be required to attend both the Lifeguard and Flat-water skills courses. Attendance at a course does not imply that you will be awarded the qualification. You must meet the assessment criteria for the award before you are certified as holding the qualification.

 

Course Fee: Canoe/Kayak Lifeguard - $260.00, Flatwater Skills - $260.00 (enrollment in both courses - $440.00)

Award Definition:

Holders of the Canoe/Kayak Lifeguard award are qualified to manage a paddling activity in enclosed situations, performing rescues as required, where the group under supervision can be seen from a single vantage point at any time and does not leave the immediate launch area

 

Canoe/Kayak Lifeguard Course Format:

The course will include both on-water practical and off-water theory components.

 

You must come prepared for paddling on both days. That means ensuring that you have enough warm clothing to change into after you get off the water.

 

The course format is subject to change. (due to weather or at the discretion of course staff)

 

The course content will include:

-          Hazard identification & risk assessment of an enclosed area paddling session

-          Planning a  paddling session (enclosed area)

-          Instruction & training methodologies

-          Communication and leadership

-          Environmental impact

-          Flat-water paddling skills

 

At the commencement of the course you will be provided with:

-          Australian Canoeing Award Scheme Canoe/Kayak Lifeguard resources booklet (or e-copy)

-          Information about the assessment process

 

You will be provided with relevant industry information during the course.

 

For those who do not meet the pre-requisite experience requirements the course will serve as an experience towards assessment at a later date. Assessment of the practical components of the course can be conducted at a later date by negotiation with the Canoe SA office or an appropriate assessor.

 

As candidates may commence the course with different skill levels, final assessments for the awards will be discussed with participants throughout the course. It is important that you bring the following documents with you to the course to ensure the most streamlined pathway to final assessment. Documents Required (copies only please):

·         Senior First Aid Certificate

·         Summary of paddling experience / log book

·         Any relevant qualifications (such as teaching certificates, AusSwim, AYF)

·         Other qualifications

·         Existing statements of attainment

 

The course fee includes the registration fees for the Canoe or Kayak Lifeguard Awards when processed concurrently. Awards not processed at the same time will incur an additional fee.
