April 2010 come to Port Pirie for Masters Canoe Polo

Monday, 3 August 2009

Join us in Port Pirie for the State Masters Games in April 2010

PORT PIRIE SUNSHINE WELCOMES MASTERS CANOE POLO

Sat 17th & Sun 18th April 2010

Pura Light Start Port Pirie Masters Games and the friendly people of Port Pirie will host South Australian State Master's  canoe polo in April 2010. If you are 30+ why not join in and make the trip north. The normally placid waters of Port Pirie Community Swimming Pool will be turned into a white-water frenzy. This social competition can be a highlight with many laughs both on the water and off. Will the winged messenger of the North (Hermes) again float on the waters of Port Pirie?

Camping at Bill's farm nestled in the Southern Flinders Ranges (near the Barooka Reservoir) is also one of the delicious treats of this trip.

Only 20 minutes from the sunny City of Port Pirie the players gather in the late Saturday sun for a chat and drink re-living the wins and and heroic exploits of the day. Some people are known to have applied medicinal alcohol to sooth aching muscles around the open log fire that serves as source of warmth in the cold night air.

Bill & Kaye turn on a treat with a sumptuous barbie with all the trimmings during the evening

The sunrise greets these old warriors with breakfeast of cereal, pancakes, bacon and eggs and fruit helping to fuel their engines for the fight to stand on the podium with the gold medal hung round your neck (and your adoring fans cheering from the sidelines).

If you are aged over 30 & enjoy a weekend of social canoe polo, book the dates in your diary. You won't be disappointed.

Saturday, 17th April & Sunday, 18th April 2010

Nineteen SASI Scholarship holders as well as a large contingent of SA Club paddlers, Canoe SA Development and SASI Talent Search athletes travelled to the new Champion Lakes Regatta Course in Perth, WA.

The programme is designed to cater for all ability levels, with the aim of providing you with the skills to enjoy the excitement and challenges of canoeing  in safety. The course includes the basic strokes for controlling your craft (either kayak, canoe or sit-on-top) and important safety and rescue procedures. A set of notes is provided, covering equipment, paddling skills, rescues, safety code, environmental code, and lists of other resources.

The course fee is $100 (inc GST) and includes all equipment, instruction, notes and Australian Canoeing Basic Skills Award Certificate on sucessful assessment.
Payment can be made by cheque, money order or credit card (Mastercard/Visa).

Courses from Basic Skills to Instructor level will be held through the 2009 - 2010 season. For brief details of the courses, see Australian Canoeing Award Scheme

Canoe or Kayak?

The kayak is the better choice for more open waters where wind and chop may be a problem (kayaks only are used at sea). There is less stowage space, and access to stowed gear is not as easy. Kayaks are usually better as singles, and are paddled with double blade paddles.

The open canoe is the ideal craft for the Murray backwaters and similar areas. It has plenty of room for gear, and is easy to load and comfortable to paddle, with a single blade paddle. Most touring canoes are built for two paddlers.

Accreditation and beyond

Following successful assessment you will be granted the Basic Skills award. Your details will be registered by Australian Canoeing. Canoe SA recommends and encourages all paddlers to join a canoe club to further their skills and to meet other people who enjoy paddling.

Clubs provide opportunity for you to paddle in some of the most beautiful parts of the state and beyond. As a beginner clubs can provide opportunity to practice and improve your skills in a safe and supportive environment. Clubs also provide opportunity to meet other paddlers who will share their experience with you.

Training usually commences in mid-October, Coaches usually will consult with players nominating about a suitable time for training.
Please note: Applicants for selection are required to attend and participate in all training sessions organised by the coach. Where a player is to be absent from a training session, the player must inform the coach by phone and follow up with their reason for their absence in writing. If you are injured you may still be required to attend a training session to assist the coach or for team discussion on tactics & etc.

 Travel

Travel to and from Perth is the responsibility of the player to arrange and purchase. Most people will travel to WA by plane. The earlier you make your travel arrangments the better will be your opportunity to get cheaper fares. If you are taking a kayak you will need to make the appropriate arrangement with the carrier for transport of the kayak (eg: as oversize luggage) or arrange for your kayak to get to Perth by other means.
Juniors who are not accompanied with a parent/guardian should speak with the State Team Manager or Junior Team Co-ordinator about travel arrangements.

Accommodation

It is usual for SA State Teams to stay together while competing interstate. Accommodation arrangements will be discussed at the selection events. If you are planning to make alternative accommodation arrangements please speak to the State Team Manager.

Team Fees

Team fees are set by the Canoe SA Polo Technical Committee once notified by the hosting state. Each player is required to pay the team fee prior to the championship. The Team Fee covers the cost of entering a team in the Championships. Team fee's are usually announced by Polo Technical Committee when they have been informed of the cost of Team Entry to the Competition. The Polo Technical Committee usually subsidises junior players (under 18)team fees as an incentive for junior players (and their families). The junior player subsidy in recent years has been approx 30 to 40% of the Junior Category Team Fee. In most cases the Committee also subsidises (by a small amount) all players who are playing in more than one team. The subsidy in this case is approx. 15 to 20% of the team fee. Team fees in 2009 were $96.25 - first Senior Category, $80.00 - second senior category, $65.00 - Junior category. Team fees are usually invoiced to players 4 weeks prior to departure for the competition and must be paid prior to the competition

Uniform

All state team representatives are required to wear a state team t-shirt at medal presentation ceremonies. State Team t-shirt can be purchased from Canoe SA or the State Team Manager for $50.00 prior to departure. If you have been selected please ensure that you have a state team t-shirt (either purchase or borrow from a previous team member)

Invoice for costs associated with State Team

Each selected player will receive an invoice for costs associated with the Championship ( accommodation, team fees, & etc) where possible about 4 weeks prior to departure. Players should (where possible) settle the account prior to the championship
